Jack Square

Jack began playing professionally in the late 1950s along with his two older brothers Cecil and Blake; they were the Square Brothers a dynamic 'almost famous' rock-a-billy trio whose career was cut tragically short on a lonely two lane highway in rural Alabama.

Jack's travels took him to New York City's Greenwich Village beatnik community where he blended into the scene. There he got turned on to the jazz sounds of the great Charlie Mingus. But he never forgot his love for the simple music of the Square Brothers and their rock-a-billy roots, roots laid-down by great bands like The Bill Black Combo, Link Wray and Bill Hailey & the Comets.

Those seemingly contradictory styles drove Jack to seek out like-minded individuals and form Woody and the Wildcats.
Woody and the Wildcats are complex musically but simple and straight-forward in their approach. This vision, Jack's' vision, sets Woody and the Wildcats apart and keeps their music, honest, rich and exciting.
